Harzer Kniesteressen in the Walkenried monastery
Harz food traditions from the old days
at any time
The Harz has always been a barren landscape. The people worked hard and the food was simple, tasty and filling. The Harz Kniester-potatoes are a special tradition. Potatoes, sprinkeled with caraway seeds, baked in the skin on a baking tray.
Served with fresh herbal quark, the traditional Harz cheese, mixed pickled vegetables, soup and cabbage, home-baked monastery bread and creamy sour cream butter - a feast!
Accompanied by a Harzer Hüttenbier - a beer directly from Altenau in the Upper Harz!
